Zora parked in her designated spot in the Kingâs Finest parking lot beside her brother Blakeâs luxury pickup truck. She sucked in a deep breath, grabbed her purse and the leather padfolio that held her iPad and bore her initials: ZAA. Only they werenât her initials anymore. Not according to the marriage license sitting on the desk in her home office.
She couldnât bring herself to display the document, but she couldnât bear to file it away, either. Sheâd looked at it every time she went into the office, as if she needed it there to remind her that she and Dallas were really married. If that hadnât convinced her, the fact that Dallas had spent every night in her bed since theyâd returned home had made it quite apparent.
Sheâd arrived at the office an hour later than usual because sheâd driven her husband to the airport for his weeklong trip to Chicago. And after a week of literally sleeping together and nothing more, sheâd been nearly ready to combust when heâd leaned in and kissed her before he hopped out of the car.
Zora glanced up at the window of her office and blew out a slow breath. Her family had been uncharacteristically quiet all week. No calls from her parents or grandfather. No text messages from her brothers. Even Quinn and Savannah had given her and Dallas their space. But she had the feeling that the Abbott radio silence was a temporary moratorium while she and Dallas were on their stay-at-home honeymoon. Now that it was over, all bets were off.
Zora stepped out of her black-on-black Mercedes E 450 coupe with dark tinted windows.
No matter how nervous you feel inside, walk with confidence. Shoulders back. Head held high.
Zora could still hear her grandmotherâs sweet voice reciting those words to her when she was a slouching tween. It was still good advice.
She wouldnât go slinking into the office with her tail between her legs as if she was embarrassed by her hasty wedding. Instead, she would own it.
Zora pushed her Peyton Coco and Breezy shades up the bridge of her nose, tipped her chin and pulled her shoulders back as she strode toward the building in her cabernet-colored power suit, a bold cheetah-print blouse and cheetah-print booties.
The security guards at the gate congratulated her on her marriage, confirming what Zora already suspected. Everyone in town and at the distillery likely knew about her and Dallasâs Vegas wedding.
Zora graciously accepted the congratulations of employees she encountered between the front door and her office. She patiently stopped to chat with each person briefly as they oohed and ahhed over the gorgeous pink sapphire engagement ring and diamond wedding band.
She spent a little more time chatting with her assistant, Emily, whoâd been holding down the fort in her absence. The younger woman bounced on her heels excitedly when Zora approached and wrapped her in a big hug. Emily was genuinely excited for her, and the womanâs enthusiasm was contagious.
âYour rings are gorgeous, and Dallas is such a sweetheart.
